In the United States, we are not doing a good job of investing in our future. According to the Department of Commerce, in 2005 the personal savings rate was -.5%. This is down from a high of 12.5% in 1981. And is one of the lowest savings rates in the industrialized world. In comparison, savings rates are 10.6% in Germany, 11.6% in France, and 6.7% in Japan. Investment brokerage firm AG Edwards has decided to do something about this. In 2005, AG Edwards launched the nest egg index. And in 2006, they launched the nest egg score.
